Glossary of Terms
Here’s a glossary of terms related to Tethered Cord Syndrome:
- Tethered Cord Syndrome (TCS): A neurological disorder where the spinal cord is abnormally attached to the surrounding tissues, limiting its movement within the spinal canal.
- Spinal Cord: The long, tubular bundle of nervous tissue that extends from the brainstem to the lower back, enclosed within the spinal canal.
- Spinal Canal: The channel within the spine that houses and protects the spinal cord.
- Neurological Disorder: A disorder affecting the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
- Myelomeningocele: A type of spina bifida where the spinal cord and its covering membranes protrude through an opening in the spine.
- Spina Bifida: A birth defect in which the spinal cord fails to develop properly.
- Neurosurgery: Surgery on the nervous system, typically the brain or spinal cord.
- Tethering: The abnormal restriction or fixation of the spinal cord within the spinal canal.
- Congenital: Present at birth, often referring to conditions or abnormalities that develop during fetal development.
- Dermatome: An area of the skin that is mainly supplied by a single spinal nerve.
- Orthopedic: Relating to the branch of medicine dealing with the correction of deformities of bones or muscles.
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): A medical imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures, including the spine and spinal cord.
- Neurogenic Bladder: A bladder dysfunction caused by a problem with the nerves controlling the bladder.
- Scoliosis: A sideways curvature of the spine.
- Tethered Cord Release: A surgical procedure to free the spinal cord from abnormal attachments, relieving tension and restoring mobility.
- Occult Spinal Dysraphism: A group of conditions where the spinal cord abnormalities are hidden under the skin.
- Neuropathic Pain: Pain caused by damage or malfunction of the nervous system.
- Hyporeflexia: Abnormally decreased reflexes.
- Urodynamic Testing: Tests used to evaluate bladder function.
- Spinal Dysraphism: A group of congenital anomalies affecting the spinal cord and its surrounding structures.
- Neurological Examination: A series of tests and observations to assess the function of the nervous system.
- Tethered Cord Symptoms: Symptoms resulting from abnormal tension on the spinal cord, including pain, weakness, and sensory abnormalities.
- Chronic: Persisting for a long time or constantly recurring.
- Cauda Equina Syndrome: Compression of the nerves at the end of the spinal cord, leading to symptoms such as low back pain, sciatica, and bladder or bowel dysfunction.
- Laminectomy: Surgical removal of the lamina, the back part of the vertebra that covers the spinal canal.
