AJ's Amazing Adventure: Explaining Sensory Processing Disorder
Once upon a time, in the enchanting land of Limited Edition, there lived a bat named AJ. AJ was no ordinary bat; she had a special way of experiencing the world called Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD).
In the vibrant town of Diversity Valley, where animals of all kinds lived together, AJ attended school at Rainbow Elementary. One day, during Show and Tell, AJ decided it was time to share her unique experience with her classmates.
As AJ fluttered to the front of the class, she felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. “Hello, everyone,” she began. “I want to tell you about something that makes me different but also very special. I have Sensory Processing Disorder, or SPD for short.”
The class listened attentively as AJ explained that SPD meant her senses—like sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—sometimes felt too strong or too weak. She described how certain sounds could be overwhelming, like the loud bell ringing at school, or how certain textures, like scratchy clothes, could be uncomfortable for her.
“But,” AJ continued with a smile, “SPD also gives me super senses! I can hear things others can’t, and I notice details that others might miss. It’s like having a superpower!”
To help her classmates understand better, AJ passed around different objects. She showed them a soft feather, explaining how some textures feel soothing to her, and a pair of earplugs, which helped her manage loud noises.
“I want you all to know that it’s okay to be different,” AJ said earnestly. “We all have unique things about us, and that’s what makes us special. SPD is just a part of who I am, and I wouldn’t change it for anything!”
After AJ’s presentation, her classmates had a newfound appreciation for her and her SPD. They understood her better and even found ways to support her in the classroom, like using quieter voices and being mindful of textures she might not like.
From then on, AJ felt more confident and included in her class. She knew that being different was a gift, and she was grateful for her friends who accepted her just the way she was.
And so, AJ’s amazing adventure of explaining Sensory Processing Disorder ended with a lesson in acceptance, understanding, and the beauty of being unique.
