- Chiari Malformation: A condition where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, impacting the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.
- Cerebellum: The part of the brain that controls coordination and movement.
- Brainstem: The base of the brain that connects to the spinal cord, controlling basic functions like breathing and heart rate.
- Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF): The fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, providing cushioning and nutrients.
- Syringomyelia: A condition where a fluid-filled cyst forms in the spinal cord, often associated with Chiari malformation.
- Decompression Surgery: A surgical procedure to create more space for the brain and relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
- Occipital Bone: The bone at the back of the skull that forms the base of the skull.
- Foramen Magnum: The opening at the base of the skull through which the spinal cord passes.
- Hydrocephalus: A condition where there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.
- Cervical Spine: The upper part of the spine, consisting of the first seven vertebrae.
- Syndrome: A group of symptoms that consistently occur together.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): A type of imaging that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the body.
- Neurosurgeon: A surgeon who specializes in surgery of the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord.
- Symptom: A physical or mental feature that is regarded as indicating a condition.
- Headache: A continuous pain in the head.
- Neck Pain: A common symptom of Chiari malformation, characterized by discomfort or stiffness in the neck.
- Dizziness: A feeling of unsteadiness or lightheadedness.
- Nausea: A feeling of sickness with an inclination to vomit.
- Balance Problems: Difficulty maintaining an upright position or steadiness when walking.
- Tonsillar Herniation: The descent of the cerebellar tonsils below the level of the foramen magnum.
- Dysphagia: Difficulty swallowing, often associated with Chiari malformation.
- Tinnitus: A ringing or buzzing noise in the ears.
- Vertigo: A sensation of spinning or dizziness, often triggered by changes in head position.
